Greetings,
This is a continuing series on obesity
and solving the weight loss problem. In the past
2 weeks, we have looked at the high protein diets,
pros and cons. Today, we are looking at 3 other
popular diets. Diet #1. Weight Watchers. This is
arguably the most popular diet in the USA, though
Atkin's people may disagree. Weight Watchers is
based upon a point system that emphasized portion
control. The plus side of this is portion control
is one of the if not THE key in virtually every
successful diet. This is a most challenging concept
for those in the habit of overeating. As such, the
group support aspect is particularly helpful. It
has been my experience that this approach has not
been very successful, particularly in the long term.
The major reason is that most overeaters return
to overeating patterns, as these patterns are never
fully addressed. Secondly, most of the meals are
nutritional imbalanced.

Diet
#2. The Zone. Designed by the outstanding scientist
Dr. Barry Sears, this approach involves balancing
the types of food eat to achieve the ideal glucose
"zone." Essentially, Dr. Sears believes every meal
should have carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats
in specific rations of 40-30-30. The major plus
to this approach is, if one follows the Zone precisely,
it works quite well. From the "regular Joe" to world
class athletes have noted weight loss and increased
energy. It is certainly worth pursuing, provided
you have the time and can figure out exactly what
"blocks" of foods to eat at what time. For many
people, this aspect is both challenging and the
main deterrent.

FACT: You burn 3 times as many calories thinking
as you do watching TV. Think about this one for
a while. . . . ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Diet #3. South Beach. This approach is very similar
to the approach of Dr. Atkins. I would describe
it as "Second Generation Atkins" so to speak. The
primary principle relies on the role of insulin
and how spikes in blood sugar create hunger. All
high(er) protein/ low(er) carb diets focus on this
aspect. Like Atkins, for short-term use, this is
one of the very best, especially for inactive or
low active people (this is another aspect we will
cover in a later newsletter). For high-activity
people, this approach is a disaster waiting to happen.

Next week, I will present the most
successful eating approach I have come across in
working with literally thousands of patients.
Next week, "Nutritional protocol for
weight reduction."
To your health,
