This week, we are going to focus
on one of the most useful and interesting herbs
in the materia medicia - Schizandrae.
Schizandrae
has a long, extensive history of treatment, dating
back some 2000 years. Out of the thousands of herbs
available, Schizandrae is the only herb that contains
all five flavors - sour, sweet, spicy, salty and
bitter. Because of this it is one of the very few
herbs that has a positive effect on all of the systems
and organs in the body. Let us take a look at some
of the major uses of the fruit: 1.For individuals
with weak lungs and/or kidneys, this is one of the
most effective herbs. It is used to stop coughing
and wheezing, and prevents the energy from "leaking"
from the lungs themselves. 2. For acute and chronic
digestive problems, it is also quite effective.
3. Stops excessive sweating. There are a number
of people who suffer from night sweats and other
spontaneous sweating conditions. They are caused
by a weakness of the lungs and the kidney energy.
Schizandrae is useful to prevent such sweating and
weakening of the individual. ================================================

4. Perhaps its most effective use is to calm the
Spirit. Anxiety, depression, worry or nervousness
is considered a disruption of the Spirit and this
herb is used to stabilize and balance the energy
of the Spirit. When the energy is calm and balanced,
the psyche (emotions) will in turn calm. On the
flip side, when creativity or compassion is desired,
this is the herb used to trigger such emotional
responses. Western medicine has shown Schizandrae
to be effective with the following: a. Strengthens
and quickens reflexes and increases work efficiency.
b. Improves memory. c. Stimulates respiration and
is effective in cases involves wheezing or asthma.
d. Decreases blood pressure and improves the cardio
vascular system. e. Increases visual acuity. f.
Significantly improves liver functioning in individuals
with hepatitis.

Treatment
Tip: Occasionally there are circumstances where
one needs to increase the volume of food but reduced
appetite prevents this. Examples include recovery
from an illness or emotional upsets. In such cases,
"tugging" on the ear lobe will help increase appetite.
There are some 300+ acupuncture points in the ear,
along with 8 major regions for treatment. The ear
lobe is one used for appetite stimulation as well
as improved vision.

This
is an herb I have used frequently with patients
over the years. The primary use has been to reduce
anxiety and improve creativity. It is very safe
and can be used on a regular basis.
Until next week.
