Berries and berry extracts help kill the bacteria that cause most ulcers and improve the effect of ulcer therapies. Heliobacter pylori (better known as H. pylori) is a bacteria that infects the stomach and the small intestine and is associated with up to 90% of cases of peptic ulcer disease (as well as gastric carcinoma and acid reflux disease). The most common characteristic of H. pylori is the common cases of treatment failure due to either difficulty in adhering to the complex medication regimen or to the bacteria's resistance to antibiotics.

Researchers from the University of Nebraska demonstrated that berry extracts not only inhibit the growth of H. pylori but also render it more susceptible to clarithromycin one of the most common antibiotics used for ulcer treatment.

Consumption of any of the 6 berries or extracts were highly successful as a "new" therapy. The berries mentioned were strawberry, blueberry, elderberry, bilberry, raspberry and cranberry. In addition to these, the mineral bismuth was also mentioned as a treatment option. (Bismuth is the major ingredient in Pepto Bismal.)
