CoQ10 and Chronic Fatigue

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome has quite a number of root causes, ranging from heavy metal toxicity to adrenal insufficiency and about a dozen in between. Add one more to the list.

In an interesting article published in Neuroendocrinology Letters, Belgium and Polish researchers reported that plasma Coenzyme Q10 levels are significantly lower in individuals with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, a chronic disease characterized by extreme fatigue and inflammatory, autonomic and neuropsychiatric symptoms.

The study compared plasma CoQ10 levels of 58 men and women diagnosised with CFS to 22 healthy control patients. 44.8% of CFS had the lowest levels measured. Increasing those levels had an impact on their diagnosis in most instances.

Doc Wellness Commentary: I am always a little leery with the “this product is good for this condition” way of thinking. Natural Medicine, when it is applied properly, clearly states: “We treat people, not disease.” This means that we can have 100 people with CFS and there will be 100 unique treatments. . . and zero protocols. Each person is an individual and should be treated uniquely.

Having said that, there certainly are measurable and to a degree, predictable trends. CFS and low Co Q10 sounds like it could be one of them. It is unlikely to “cure” CFS in all cases but may be a strong component in the overall treatment plan.
