Why You Need (Yes Need) Coffee

I suspect this will be the most popular post of the day. Why? Virtually everyone loves coffee and when they find out there are many benefits from moderate consumption, it makes the experience that much more enjoyable.

Coffee is arguably the most popular drink on the planet (though water, wine and beer drinkers may debate this). It is estimated some 1.6 billion (yes, billion with a “b”) are consumed on a daily basis. Though volume and source are issues, the overall benefits are becoming more widely known.

It not only wakes you up, coffee can make you smarter. Caffeine works in the brain by blocking the effects of adenosine (a neurotransmitter)  which actually the electrical activity in the brain. In the process, it releases many more memory enhancing and mood improving neurotransmitters. End result? You feel more energetic, upbeat, creative and your cognitive factors are improved.

More good news on the brain front. Coffee consumption relates to lower incidences of dementia and  diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimers.

Looking to lose weight? Coffee (actually the active ingredient in coffee, caffeine)  stimulates the metaboliisme and helps to mobilize fatty acids from the fat tissues themselves. It also causes the body to want to move more so, thus burning additional calories in the process.

If you are diabetic or concerned about this issue. . . Drinking this warm beverage correlates with a significant reduction in type II diabetes rates.  Those who consumed coffee on a regular basis were the least likely to be diagnosed with this issue. Though there were other factors involved, coffee consumption is one of them.

One area that was thought to be a concern was coffee consumption and liver related issues.  Now we know that coffee  protects against certain major liver issues, lowering the risk of liver cancer by 40% and cirrhosis by as much as 80% as 2 examples.

Now, there is a flip side. As mentioned, 2 issues are of concern:

1. Coffee is the most sprayed product on the planet. As such, look for Organic coffee such as Paul Newman’s brand. If you cannot find it or would rather hit the local Starbucks, add cilantro to your diet. This will help flush toxins on a regular basis.

2. “If a little is good, then more must be. . . .” Stop right there. More love is better. More patience is better. More money is better. More than 2 cups of coffee per day and you may have some issues. Excessive caffeine consumption leads to adrenal insufficiency. Adrenal insuffiency over time can lead to heart related issues. Bottom line. . . .stick with 2 cups and enjoy every drop.
