I received a question via email about aromatherapy.
Firstly, it is very much an effective form of prevention and treatment, particularly for the emotions. It has an extensive history and is closely associated with herbal medicine.
When raw herbs are cooked in a decoction, the scent is considered medicinal and healing to all who come in contact. This was how aromatherapy came into existence. It was observed that the odor from the cooking of the herbs was having a healing effect on those in the vicinity of the herbs being prepared.
(It should be noted that raw herbs are considered the strongest and most useful. . . followed by liquid tinctures, powders, tablets and a distant last place, pills.)
Here are 3 classic examples of how to use aromatherapy in a broad sense:
1. Sage purifies
2. Cedar clears (or removes)
3. Sweetgrass adds (or blesses, so to speak)
If a person is struggling with obsessive thoughts, burning Cedar (or dabbing cedar oil on the wrist) would be the way to go.
If an interview is on the horizon and courage is needed, Sweetgrass would be recommended.
These are simple examples. True aromatherapy is a detailed art and science.
