A brand new study from University in Brazil states that mature women can reduce their risk of falling and fracturing bones by participating in a program that involves intense exerices done in a pool. The exercises are specific and not simply the act of swimming.
The water workouts increased the women’s strength, and muscle tone. As such, the researchers noted that the physical activity will improve the strength of muscles, tendons and probably bone. The latter is a unique finding in that most prior research stated that weight bearing exercise(s) was the sole way a person (man or woman) could strengthen the skeletal system and integrity of the bones.
The training involved methods similar to (land based) sprinting or HIT (High Intensity Training). For example, holding on the side and kicking as hard and as fast as possible for 30 seconds, rest for 10 and repeat for a total of 5 sets or more. These types of exercises also had a favorable impact on body fat reduction and improved cardiovascular health.
