ReThinking Walmat

I read an interesting comment about Walmart. It stated something to the effect that the heirs of Walmart have more wealth than 40% of Americans, but they still pay low wages.

Firstly, I have no idea if that statistic is accurate or not. Mark Twain was certainly correct when he said, “There are lies, damn lies and statistics.” We see this in action from the politicians to CNN and everywhere in between. Lies. Damn Lies. And stats.

For arguments sake, let us assume this is accurate. In fact, let’s go even further. Let’s say Walmart is a horrible company (This is not to state or imply any accuracy in this sentence.)

The question is not why they are paying what they are paying, or why they may be a horrible company to work for, but rather. . . why would an individual work for them?

I asked this question to an employee and received a response of “the economy is terrible and people take whatever they can get.” Forgive me, but I disagree. In the 1980s for example, things were booming, and people were still working for Walmart. In parts of the 1990s and 2000s, things were booming, and people were still working for Walmart.

It is not just Walmart. Here in Central Florida, I often hear people complain about the low wages Disney pays, yet they will continue to work for them.

Granted, there are some companies that are undoubtedly a disgrace. There are some that are greedy, ruthless and unethical. (The one that rhymes with “Ponsanto” comes to mind immediately.)

In addition, there is also no question that various aspects of the economy are manipulated by the powerful. Only the naive would question this.

You may not be able to control all aspects of the economy or of various companies, but you can choose what to do with your life. You can be a creator, not one who repeatedly “settles for.”

Minimum wage jobs are designed as transitions or temporary stops, not career choices. Despite the current economic conditions, today someone is starting their own business. In a year or 2 or 10, they will be very successful. Endurance, commitment, and work are still viable skills that when applied, can produce spectacular results.

People who work at Walmart etc., are doing so by choice. Somehow, this is getting lost in the mix. They are not victims. They are not being forced at gun point to be employed or stay employed there. Viable options and opportunities are still out there, provided one is willing to look and work for them.

Never settle. Fight for the life, career, dreams and the love that you deserve. Remember the works of William Shedd:

“A ship is safe in a harbour, but that is not what ships are for.”
