Use This Prior If You Are Having Surgery

You have a surgery scheduled and are getting rather nervous about it. Everyone says that it is a simple procedure but they are not the ones undergoing surgery. You have educated self about the risks and rewards and know as much as possible, what is expected to occur. You know the procedure, time frame and pain level involved. You are as prepared as you can. Is there anything else that can be done?

Listen carefully. Or better yet. . . listen. . . to music.

Researchers from the U.K. have shown that music has significantly positive effects on surgical patients. Benefits include less pain, anxiety and an overall elevation of mood. Less healing time was also observed.

Additionally, patients used less medication and had less overall complications post-surgery. Before, during and after, clinical differences — improvements — were noted across the board.

It is not just you, the patient. A study from the University of Texas found that when surgeons listened to music they enjoyed, their technique and efficiency improved as well.

Doc’s Thoughts: Music is a gift, one that not only makes us feel better but provides many health benefits. Aside from the above, music improves mood, memory and the ability to learn any subject with greater ease. In fact, certain methods have shown that a language can be learned in as little as 60 days.
