Is Lemon Water Really Worth It?

Today alone, I read 3 posts that espouse the great benefits of drinking lemon water in the morning. I also remember when I was in school, an expert in Ayurvedic medicine went on about the history and tremendous health benefits of drinking lemon water in the morning.

How accurate is this claim? Just because it has an extensive history, does this make it useful or healthy? A review of the literature reveals the following:

  1. It is lemon water (with emphasis on the last word). As such, it will address any dehydration issues that may be present.
  2. Lemon does contain a good amount of Vitamin C. As such, immunity will be boosted and the overall health of the gums will improve.
  3. Lemon has the flavor of sour which is specific to the liver. Therefore, it can help to detoxify the liver, balance the mood (Liver is responsible for the emotions of anger, frustration or depression) and help with the eyes.
  4. Finally, lemon will aid in the (re-)generation of collagen which helps with the skin.

While the claims may be a bit over the top at times, there are definite health benefits to consuming lemon water not only in the morning but anytime during the day.
