The speed at which change is occurring is unprecedented. We have gone beyond “warp speed” and entered an era which is almost too much to bear for many.

As a small business owner, it is a deep challenge to keep up with all of the growth in general, and my area of expertise (natural medicine/nutrition) in particular. The information in the field of nutrition for example, more than doubles every 3 years. Add to this the exponential growth of social media and other newer forms of marketing, promotion and the like and I am constantly inundated by borderline feelings of overwhelming and a world that is moving too fast.

So I slow it down.

How?

By running.

Early Saturday morning, I often go for a long distance run (anywhere from 10-20 miles) at a slow pace. I have no iPhone, no iPod, no i-Anything. It is just me and Mother Nature, side by side, fully connected.

The only sounds I hear are the melodic sounds of a blue jay or mocking bird. They remind me that direct conversation matter so much more than a tweet or text.

My field of vision is filled with majestic trees and exotic plants who call attention to the fact that standing tall and being silent can speak greater volumes than any TED Talk or YouTube clip.

Nearby are a pair of squirrels, merrily chasing each other up and down a series of trees. Yes, they are just a pair of furry rodents, yet at this moment, they are my teachers. In the midst of their scurrying about, I am reminded of what laughter and true fun sounds and feels like. Contrast with the constant noise of email notices or internal dialogue, reminding me to do this and upgrade that.

In the heart of movement, I am finding stillness. In the center of the forest, I am connecting to the center of my heart.

I slow down and move so I can speed up and produce. I connect to what matters, and am reminded that the only real world is the one inside my Being.

I cannot control the speed at which technology, business and life is moving, but I know that it takes only a couple of miles and some furry friends to remind me I can slow it down.
