The Great Breakfast Debate: Protein or Carbs

Which do you eat? Eggs or other protein sources or cereal or other carbohydrate sources? Do you think it makes a difference?

If you answered YES to the last question, you are correct!

Eating protein at breakfast increases satiety and help to prevent excessive calorie intake throughout the course of the entire day. In other words, eating protein at breakfast prevents overeating during the day. However, this is only part of the answer. The TYPE of protein is as important as having protein.

A recent study showed that the type of protein is the key factor here. The high-quality protein, typically found in range fed eggs enhanced the feeling of fullness as compared to lower quality proteins such as wheat protein found in cereal. Though both protein sources are almost identical in terms of amount, it is the high quality that makes the difference.

Doc’s Thoughts: I think this is a very valuable study for a number of reasons. For starters, I am not a big fan of grains. A little may be fine but most people consume way too much. Add the fact that grains such as corn are almost completely GMO, this is another reason to avoid at all costs.

As a side note, if you separate the whites from the yellow (of the egg) and consume just the yellow portion, this will assist you in terms of fat loss.
